The Northwoods section includes the arboreal area along Chastain Park Avenue. The Chastain Park Conservancy recently added three outdoor pavilions to this area, revitalized pre-existing soft nature trails connecting 13 historic grill sites, and invested in playground renovations (projected completion in Q1 2025). Building on these successes,
the Northwoods Project now aims to open an additional 20 acres of park space above Alex Cooley Drive and re-envisioning a historic sunken plaza with a cave (popularly known as the “Master Grill” and “Witch’s Cave”) that was buried by the Parks Department in the 1970s.
This area will be brought back to life to serve as an outdoor community gathering space and the main access point to the Northwoods acreage. We hope it will once again ignite imagination and cultivate a sense of connection and contemplation, encouraging all visitors to enjoy the new passive green space.
